A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: “How heavy is this glass of water?”

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” She continued, “The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything.”

It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses. As early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night. Remember to put the glass down!

I think this just changed my life.

Meet Hawa Abdi. A woman who has never raised her fist in anger against another human being, but also one who could perform three C-sections on dirt-poor women, wash her hands, then go straight outside, stare down an army of gun-toting hardcore fanatical Somali militiamen, and with four words send them running for their lives on a light-speed rainbow of shame and self-loathing without even blinking. A woman once appropriately described once as “one part Mother Teresa, one part Rambo.”

I recently returned from Trinidad and Tobago (actually just Trinidad because Tobago is an entirely separate island), and it was the most fun I’ve had in my entire life; not joking, this is very serious.

The night I left was directly after my weekly gig at Philadelphia Bar and Restaurant in Old City. I got done at 11 and went home to unload my equipment. I grabbed my luggage and headed out to JFK airport. Driving and parking in a long term lot made the most sense. The drive was long but I got to JFK 3 hours before the flight.

Flight was good and I slept most of the way and when I arrived I could immediately feel how great the weather was outside the plane and the vibe coming off the island. I was picked up and we were on our way to get settled in.

Night one, Thursday: “Tribe Ignite Fete”. So what is a fete? Its like Lollapalooza but with all Trini people dancing and drinking their asses off for 6 hours straight. It turns out that the musicians of Trinidad (who play soca music) write a song each year to compete for top performer of that year. These musicians come out at the fetes and play their tune first and last in their set. 3-4 acts throughout the night with DJ’s playing in between. Its extremely loud and fast paced. I didn’t wear earplugs the first night and regretted it later. Didn’t make that mistake again. Anyhow, me and my adopted Trini family stayed and danced all the way through drinking enormous amounts of rum and coconut water. It started at 11pm and went to 5am. Got back to sleep at 7am.

Day two, Friday: “Rise all-inclusive Fete”. Got a good night sleep and hung around, ate, but then had to get ready to do it all over again. Again 11pm-5am. We danced and drank the whole time.

Day three, Saturday “Jamboree Fete” Same thing, but 5pm to 1am. This next party had Trini music god Machel Montano play his song “Float” which is so jubilant that I felt like a 4 year old hearing music for the first time again. When the chorus hits in that song its quite a sight to see 30,000 people simultaneously lose their minds. Needed this one to end early the next day would get weird.

Sunday we went to Macqueripe Beach and jumped off a 20 foot cement ledge into the ocean. The view was amazing and the grounds leading up to the beach looked like Longwood Gardens.

After settling in we had some food and prepared ourselves for a long stretch of partying of the likes I have never seen. We woke up at midnight, put on some crappy cloths and headed out. Why the crappy cloths? Well, because we were going out for J’ouvert. (see picture above) That picture was taken at around 9am. That’s right, we paraded the streets drinking rum from 2am-9am. Went back to the house and hosed off.

Now things get rough. After waking up around 5pm it was time to get ready for Carnival Monday. This day is a dress rehearsal for the big day so we dressed up in part of our costume (yes, there’s a costume) and headed out around 8pm.

Let me explain how this next part works. 4 huge industrial sized trucks pulling an endless amount of speakers playing the loudest music you ever heard while moving at 3-4 mph. 3 trucks in toe carrying 1,000 gallons of booze. 500,000 people dancing in a parade that doesn’t stop. It was dangerous and free just the way I like it.

At this point my legs were starting to fall off from all the parading/dancing/drinking. I must have run through 3-4 bottles of Angostura Single Barrel Rum in 30 hours.

So we wake up at 5am and get into our full costume. We were part of the Fantasy Band in the troup Panthera. Went out and got in line with half of Trinidad’s population to parade for Carnival Tuesday. Costumes were made of vibrant colors and feathers. It was quite sight to see so many people in a great mood dancing in these fantastic costumes. We marched until 1pm and decided to take a break, which didn’t last very long. We took some of the full costume off and somehow landed right back in the parade. This went on until well passed midnight. I have never had more fun and its a possibility i never will because the first time experiencing something is always the best.
