Charles Roach, Toronto lawyer and human rights advocate, dies at 79

rhythmonthemic:

A distant uncle of mine, and one of the reasons why my family was able to settle in this country, had died a few days back.  I remember him being a man of conviction and a proud representative of the Caribbean community (he also was a founding member of Caribana).  Besides his stance on Civil Rights and Liberties I’ll remember him as a man who was always his own. Friendly in tone and dangerous in speech.  Great article to begin to know a little of what he was about.

awkwardmixedgirl:

Charles Roach, a well-known Toronto lawyer, human rights advocate and one of the founders of Caribana, died of brain cancer Tuesday. He was 79.

Roach fought for the rights of migrant workers and people seeking refugee status in Canada. He was advocate for victims of police brutality and systematic racism, and was a leader in Toronto’s black community.

Everyday Is Like Sunday

“The goal was to try to make something that would appeal to people who are usually not targeted on Canadian television,” 27-year old writer and producer Pavan Moondi said

Everyday Is Like Sunday is a ten-episode web series/film shot in Toronto, Canada. The series completed filming on August 2nd, 2012 and is currently in post-production.

Toronto City Hall Being Built.

Taken with my camera phone while eating fish and chips with a nice cold stella @ The Big Fish on Queen Street West on a Saturday early evening.
I love this area of the city with its sweet mellow vibes.  The painting across the street sums up my time there.

Scarborough Shootings July 16 2012

It’s really sad that a massive shooting happened at all. Especially in a community that is a mere 2 minutes away from me. I know the struggles the people in that community have attempted to overcome their social status and stigma, and compared to back in the day Scarborough as a whole has really come a long way when it comes to violence. 23 shot, a 14 year old and 23 year old dead. A baby was grazed with a bullet. It’s disgusting.  I honestly hope that when they catch these shit heads, that they’re sent to jail for the rest of their lives. People in Scarborough are awesome. We’re extremely diverse by race, lifestyle, religion, wildlife (yes we have foxes and deers in the city!) and unlike the rest of our Canadian brethren, we don’t stand for too much bS.  The day will come when ppl in Scarborough will realize its true jewel and start respecting our community and the beauty it offers.  I’m not too sure what more I want to say about this, except that I know this will never stop the ppl of Scarborough from living their lives, but I’m really disappointed.

When more than 1,000, mostly white, mostly young, mostly middle class people get assaulted and arrested by police officers on the lawn of Queen’s Park, it’s a big deal. Newspaper headlines reveal how police officers who break the law and beat up those they’ve detained usually get away with a slap on the wrist — if that.

But when the same officers assault people at night, in alleyways and in interview rooms — people who disproportionately come from racialized and low-income communities — it rarely makes the news. And in these cases, even a slap on the wrist is hard to come by.

Nerds, Rejoice: Toronto Is Getting a Star Trek Day

Wow, I can’t wait to casually show up and pretend I know nothing about Star Trek, when really I’m an In the Closet Trekkie!  I’ll be discovered when the Ferengi’s notice my ease with doing the Vulcan salute.  Very Nice T-Dot

A Guy Can Dream Can’t He?
Adam Goodenough artist statement:
Anyone who lives or has been to Toronto knows this is not what the TTC subway looks like. But, the assignment just said to make a map so I went about drawing all the extentions and new routes I could fit in.
Done in Illustrator CS2 in about 10-15 hours. With much thanks to Google Maps.
Follow the source to view a zoomed in version of the full subway line. Very Cool
